Legal Battles Erupt Over Miami Land Transfer for Trump Presidential Library

A legal dispute is unfolding in Miami over the transfer of prime real estate intended for Donald Trump’s presidential library. Miami Dade College is appealing a ruling that temporarily halted the land giveaway, while activists argue the process violated open government laws. The valuable downtown Miami parcel, eyed for a library and potential hotel, has become a focal point of contention.

Key Takeaways

  • Miami Dade College is appealing a judge’s ruling that blocked the transfer of land for the Trump Presidential Library.
  • An activist sued, alleging violations of Florida’s Government in the Sunshine law during the initial vote.
  • A judge later dismissed the complaint after the college re-voted on the land transfer in a public meeting.
  • The nearly 3-acre property is valued at over $67 million and is considered a prime development site.

Legal Challenges Mount

The District Board of Trustees for Miami Dade College has filed a notice of appeal challenging a lower court’s injunction that temporarily stopped officials from transferring a valuable parcel of land in downtown Miami. This land is slated for the future presidential library of former President Donald Trump.

Allegations of Sunshine Law Violations

The legal challenge was initiated by Marvin Dunn, a local activist and historian, who alleged that the college board violated Florida’s Government in the Sunshine law. Dunn contended that the board did not provide adequate notice for a special meeting held on September 23, during which the vote to gift the land to the state occurred. The state officials, including Governor Ron DeSantis, subsequently voted to transfer the property to the foundation established for the library.

Judicial Rulings and Appeals

Initially, Circuit Judge Mavel Ruiz sided with Dunn, issuing an injunction to block the land transfer. However, the judge later dismissed Dunn’s complaint without prejudice. This decision followed a subsequent, lengthy public meeting where the college board re-voted on the land transfer, which the judge deemed had "fully cured" any alleged violation of the open government law. Despite the dismissal, the judge acknowledged Dunn’s commitment to the legal challenge.

The Valuable Property

The property in question is a nearly 3-acre parcel located on Biscayne Boulevard, described as a "developer’s dream." A 2025 assessment valued it at over $67 million, with experts suggesting its market value could reach hundreds of millions more. The land was previously used as an employee parking lot for Miami Dade College’s Wolfson campus and is situated near iconic landmarks like the Freedom Tower.

Future of the Land

Governor DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet, acting as trustees of state lands, unanimously approved the conveyance of the property to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Foundation. The foundation is led by Eric Trump, Michael Boulos (Tiffany Trump’s husband), and attorney James Kiley. Eric Trump has expressed ambitions for the library to become a significant architectural landmark in Miami.
