Jacksonville Beach police are on high alert this weekend, urging residents to report any suspicious gatherings at short-term rental properties that could escalate into "takeover" events. This comes after social media chatter suggested a potential repeat of disruptive parties, following a recent incident that resulted in gunfire.

Key Takeaways

  • Police are proactively monitoring for large parties at vacation rentals.
  • Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity.
  • Increased police presence is planned for the weekend.

Heightened Alert Amid Social Media Chatter

Authorities are concerned about online discussions indicating a possible "takeover" party being planned for rental homes in Jacksonville Beach this weekend. While a specific event posted on social media after a previous incident has since been removed, police remain vigilant due to ongoing chatter.

Community Involvement and Police Preparedness

Commander Thom Bingham of the Jacksonville Beach Police Department is appealing to residents for their cooperation. He has asked those living near short-term rental properties to contact the police immediately if they observe large crowds gathering. To address potential issues, extra officers will be on duty throughout the weekend.

Recap of Recent Incident

Commander Bingham also provided an update on a recent "takeover" event that occurred last Saturday on 3rd Street, which unfortunately ended with gunfire and left five teenagers wounded. The department is working to prevent similar incidents from occurring.

What Residents Should Do

If you live near a short-term rental property and notice:
