A devastating murder-suicide has sent shockwaves through the South Florida real estate community, claiming the lives of prominent agent Melanie Hyer and her two young daughters, Savannah and Sienna. The girls’ father, Ryan Whiten, is believed to have committed the heinous acts before taking his own life. The family was discovered deceased in their Doral home following a welfare check.

Key Takeaways

  • Prominent South Florida real estate agent Melanie Hyer and her two daughters, Savannah (11) and Sienna (8), were found dead in their Doral home.
  • Investigators believe the girls’ father, Ryan Whiten, murdered them before committing suicide.
  • All four victims died from multiple stab wounds.
  • Hyer was a highly respected agent with over 20 years of experience, known for her kindness and community involvement.
  • The incident has deeply impacted the local real estate industry and the Doral community.

A Community in Grief

Melanie Hyer, a well-regarded figure in the South Florida real estate market for over two decades, was remembered by colleagues and friends as a "light of sunshine" and a "woman of extraordinary warmth and fierce devotion to her daughters." Her career began at Keller Williams Realty before she joined Pro Estate Realty in 2022. She was known for her success, having sold over 1,000 properties across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, and for her significant community involvement, including with organizations like 100+ Women Who Care Miami Beach and Dade Legal Aid.

The Tragic Discovery

Authorities were called to Hyer’s home in the gated Doral Isles community on Tuesday for a welfare check. Upon arrival, they discovered the bodies of Hyer, her daughters Savannah, 11, and Sienna, 8, and her ex-husband, Ryan Whiten. All four had sustained multiple stab wounds. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation, though initial findings point to Whiten as the perpetrator of the murders and subsequent suicide. The exact timeline of the events remains under investigation.

Background and Relationships

Hyer and Whiten were divorced and co-parenting their children. While they were never married to each other, both had remarried and subsequently divorced other partners. Whiten’s ex-wife reportedly described their relationship as "toxic" and expressed fears that Hyer might take the children away permanently. Family statements indicated that Whiten had a history of drug abuse. Despite their past, Hyer’s ex-husband, Alvin Jaramillo, remained a close friend.

Impact on the Community

The loss has deeply affected not only Hyer’s professional circle but also the wider Doral community. The principal of Downtown Doral Charter School, where Savannah and Sienna were students, expressed profound sorrow, noting the girls were "deeply loved by their school, their teachers, and their peers." The Doral Field Hockey Club also shared their grief, remembering the mother and daughters for their kindness and positive impact.

A Legacy of Service

Beyond her real estate achievements, Melanie Hyer was recognized for her "unwavering dedication to serving others." She was a driving force behind initiatives aimed at strengthening the legal profession and expanding access to justice. Her commitment was honored with Dade Legal Aid’s Pro Bono Service Award for Exemplary Service to the Community in 2025. Her family described the loss as "a wound that will never heal."
