South Florida developer George Pino became visibly emotional during the opening statements of his trial for a 2022 boat crash that killed 17-year-old Luciana "Lucy" Fernandez. The incident, which occurred on Biscayne Bay, also left another teenager with severe injuries. Pino faces charges of second-degree manslaughter and vessel homicide.

Key Takeaways

  • George Pino, a prominent real estate developer, is on trial for a fatal 2022 boat crash.
  • The crash resulted in the death of 17-year-old Luciana "Lucy" Fernandez and injuries to others on board.
  • Pino experienced an emotional outburst in court, leading to a temporary suspension of proceedings.
  • Prosecutors allege Pino was negligent and lied about the circumstances of the crash.
  • The defense claims the incident was a tragic accident and that Pino was disoriented due to a concussion.

Emotional Outburst Halts Trial

During the initial proceedings on Monday, George Pino, 54, broke down in tears, shaking and sobbing. This unexpected emotional display forced Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez to dismiss the jury for the day, deeming the behavior inappropriate for jurors to witness. The judge emphasized the need for Pino to control his emotions in court.
Pino’s defense attorney, Howard Srebnick, expressed concern for his client’s well-being, suggesting he might not be well. Miami Fire Rescue crews checked on Pino before the court was adjourned.

Allegations and Defense Arguments

Prosecutors contend that Pino was piloting his 29-foot boat at approximately 50 miles per hour when he struck a channel marker in Biscayne Bay. The impact caused a large hole in the boat, throwing passengers into the water. Eleven people were injured, and Fernandez later died at the hospital.

According to reports, 61 empty alcohol bottles were found on the boat the day after the crash. Prosecutors allege that Pino lied to the police about the cause of the crash, fabricating a story about a wave from another boat. They argue that Pino failed to follow basic boating laws and that his actions, including alleged drinking and operating the boat on the wrong side of the channel, led to Fernandez’s death.

The defense, however, maintains that the incident was a tragic accident. Srebnick stated that Pino did not intend to crash or harm anyone and that his wife, Cecilia Pino, who was also on board, will testify that he was not impaired. The defense also suggests that Pino may have suffered a concussion during the crash, leading to disorientation and unreliable memory of the event.

The Victim and Other Injuries

Luciana "Lucy" Fernandez, 17, was a passenger on the boat, which was carrying several teenage girls celebrating Pino’s daughter Carolina’s 18th birthday. Katerina Puig, then 18, also sustained permanent and debilitating injuries in the crash.

Fernandez’s father testified about the chaotic scene and the devastating experience of seeing his daughter in the hospital. The trial is expected to last approximately two weeks, and Pino faces potential decades in prison if convicted.
