Property Taxes: A "Perpetual Rent"
During his State of the State address, Governor DeSantis urged lawmakers to work towards providing "transformational relief" for Florida taxpayers. He articulated his view that property taxes are akin to a continuous payment to the government, arguing that homeowners should be able to own their property outright without this ongoing obligation. DeSantis suggested that placing a measure on the ballot for property tax reform would allow the people to have a direct say in the matter. This comes as the legislative session begins, with property tax changes being a significant priority for House Republicans.
Veto of Left-Lane Camping Ban
Governor DeSantis explained his reasoning behind vetoing House Bill 317 in 2024, which sought to prohibit drivers from lingering in the furthest left-hand lane on highways with a speed limit of 65 mph or higher, unless passing or preparing to exit. In his veto letter, DeSantis stated that the bill’s language was "too broad" and could lead to unfair ticketing. He expressed concern that drivers might be penalized even when not impeding traffic or when few other vehicles were present. Furthermore, he suggested the bill could potentially increase urban congestion as drivers might avoid the left lane altogether for fear of being cited.

Beyond property taxes, DeSantis also touched upon other legislative priorities, including a proposal for an "artificial intelligence bill of rights" to regulate the industry and establish age limits. He emphasized the importance of ensuring new technologies develop ethically and in alignment with American values.
