Broward County is currently undergoing a significant transformation as several major infrastructure and development projects move forward. From the approval of a new municipal headquarters in Fort Lauderdale to substantial healthcare expansions and new workforce housing initiatives, these developments reflect a regional commitment to modernizing public services and addressing community needs.

Key project highlights

  • Fort Lauderdale commissioners approved a $217 million plan to construct a new City Hall.
  • Broward Health reached a major construction milestone on its new medical office building and parking garage.
  • Developers are actively seeking incentives to expand workforce housing options in Hollywood.

Fort Lauderdale approves new city hall development

Following a period of deliberation regarding the potential purchase of existing office space, the Fort Lauderdale City Commission has voted 3-2 to proceed with a new $217.1 million City Hall project. The decision marks a return to the city’s original plan for a ground-up development, which will be led by FTL City Hall Partners LLC. This new facility is intended to replace the previous municipal building, which was demolished following extensive damage during a record flood in 2023.

The project has seen significant cost adjustments, with the current design-build estimate dropping by approximately $50 million from original projections. While the approval is currently preliminary, city officials emphasize that a dedicated municipal structure is essential for the city’s identity and long-term functionality. The commission continues to weigh the costs of new construction against the complexities of retrofitting older, existing buildings to meet modern code requirements.

Healthcare infrastructure expansion at Broward Health

Broward Health has officially marked a major construction milestone for its new medical office building and parking garage located across from the Broward Health Medical Center. The project represents a substantial investment in the region’s healthcare capacity, designed to improve patient access and modernize clinical environments. More than 150 community leaders and officials gathered to celebrate the progress, which included a ceremonial handprint dedication in the freshly poured concrete.

The new eight-story medical office building will span approximately 188,000 square feet and house a variety of specialties, including cardiovascular services, pulmonology, and neuroscience. Accompanied by a seven-floor parking garage with nearly 700 spaces, the development is expected to be completed by 2027. This expansion is part of a larger system-wide effort to support growing patient populations and integrate advanced medical technologies into the Broward County healthcare landscape.

Advancing workforce housing in Hollywood

In addition to public and medical infrastructure, private developers are working to address the ongoing demand for residential options. Affiliated Development is currently seeking $6 million in incentives to facilitate the construction of new workforce housing in Hollywood. This initiative highlights the ongoing efforts by local municipalities and private firms to collaborate on solutions that ensure housing remains accessible for the region’s workforce, balancing the rapid pace of commercial development with the essential need for residential growth.
