Destin Waterfront Deal Sparks Fierce Debate: $84 Million for Four Acres?

A proposed $84 million purchase of four acres of prime Destin waterfront property by the Florida Cabinet has ignited a firestorm of controversy. While supporters champion the acquisition as a crucial step for public access and conservation, critics are questioning the hefty price tag and the transparency of the deal, arguing the funds could be better allocated elsewhere.

Key Takeaways

  • The Florida Cabinet is considering an $84 million deal for four acres of waterfront land in Destin.
  • Supporters cite the need for public access and long-term conservation.
  • Critics question the high cost, the property’s current state, and the seller’s political ties.

A Pricey Proposition

The state is looking to acquire a significant parcel of land in Destin, a location known for its valuable real estate. The proposed $84 million price tag for just four acres has raised eyebrows, with many residents and observers deeming it exceptionally high, even for Destin.

State Senator Don Gaetz defended the potential purchase, emphasizing the importance of securing public access to Destin Harbor for future generations. "Property in Destin is very valuable and there are no cheap real estate deals in Destin," Gaetz stated. "But I think it’s critical that the public have access to as much of the Destin Harbor as possible for posterity."

Concerns Over Value and Transparency

However, many Destin residents are skeptical about the deal’s justification and cost. Harold Summerford, a local property owner, expressed suspicion, stating, "In my opinion, it’s not. I mean, it’s just very, very suspicious." He urged for a thorough review of the property’s original purchase price compared to the current offer.

Marcie Bell, another Destin resident, highlighted the property’s current condition, describing it as a "concrete wall" with jetty rock on the water side, questioning the lack of direct beach access and the presence of wildlife that would warrant conservation efforts. "Is it $84 million for a parking lot?" she questioned.

Scrutiny on the Seller

Adding another layer to the controversy is the identity of the seller, identified as real estate investor Robert Guidry. Public records indicate Guidry has been politically active and made campaign donations. Reports suggest he acquired the land approximately a decade ago for $8 million, a stark contrast to the current proposed sale price.

Residents like Bell are calling for greater transparency and public input. "Who spends $83 to $84 million of somebody else’s money without having their input? Things need to be more clear," she urged.

The Florida state cabinet is scheduled to vote on the proposed acquisition on Tuesday. Neither Okaloosa County commissioners nor the Destin Mayor’s office have provided interviews regarding the deal. Robert Guidry has not yet returned calls seeking comment.
