South Florida has lost a transformative figure with the passing of Don Soffer, the visionary real estate developer credited with shaping the City of Aventura. Known as the city’s "godfather," Soffer passed away on July 20 at the age of 92. His legacy extends beyond development, encompassing significant philanthropic contributions, particularly to the University of Miami.

Key Takeaways

  • Don Soffer, a prominent real estate developer and philanthropist, has passed away at 92.
  • He is widely recognized as the "godfather" of Aventura, transforming swampland into a thriving community.
  • Soffer made substantial philanthropic contributions, notably a $25 million gift to the University of Miami’s stem cell research.

The Architect of Aventura

Soffer’s impact on South Florida’s landscape is undeniable. He is best known for his role in developing the City of Aventura, a project that began with a vision sketched on a cocktail napkin. Overcoming challenges, he transformed 785 acres of swampland into a sophisticated community featuring high-rise buildings, golf courses, and the renowned Aventura Mall. His foresight recognized South Florida’s potential as a hub for living, working, and recreation long before it became a popular destination.

A Legacy of Generosity

Beyond his development achievements, Soffer was a dedicated philanthropist. His family’s significant contributions to the University of Miami have left a lasting mark. A $25 million gift established the Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute (ISCI), fostering groundbreaking research in areas like cardiology and sports medicine. In recognition of this generosity, the Clinical Research Building was renamed the Don Soffer Clinical Research Center.

The Soffer family’s support also extends to the University’s athletic programs, with the Carol Soffer Indoor Practice Facility named in their honor. Soffer’s daughter, Jacquelyn R. Soffer, continues this commitment as a member of the University’s Board of Trustees.

Soffer’s philanthropic endeavors were broad, including a $15 million donation to his alma mater, Brandeis University, support for Mount Sinai Medical Center, and contributions to educational and arts organizations. He also played a role in establishing the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center and helped build an orphanage in Haiti. His commitment to community and innovation was further recognized with the naming of Don Soffer Aventura High School in 2019 and the Simon Wiesenthal Center Humanitarian Award in 2024.
