Florida Luxury Properties Face Forfeiture in $194 Million Fraud Case

Four South Florida properties bought with money prosecutors say was diverted from the federal government are among the assets former senior CIA official David J. Rush has agreed to forfeit. Rush pleaded guilty to wire fraud after admitting to a scheme that cost the government about $193.6 million. The properties may be sold as authorities seek to recover the funds.

Key takeaways

  • Rush directed about $102 million toward four properties in Palm Beach and Hobe Sound, according to court filings.
  • The properties are part of a broader forfeiture agreement covering gold, cash, watches and vehicles.
  • Rush faces up to 20 years in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 28, 2027.

The case centers on alleged misuse of classified-program authorities to bypass routine financial scrutiny. Rush’s guilty plea and the forfeiture process now put his real estate and other assets at risk of sale or seizure to help repay the government.

Four South Florida acquisitions

Court filings identify two Palm Beach homes, a Palm Beach land parcel and a parcel in Hobe Sound among the purchases. The acquisitions were reported to total about $102 million. One property in Hobe Sound was valued at $40 million; the Palm Beach purchases included two homes and a parcel, each worth tens of millions of dollars.

Prosecutors say approximately $145 million was transferred to a holding company established at Rush’s direction. The money was used for property purchases and related expenses, including renovations and improvements. Authorities allege Rush intended to resell the properties for a profit.

Alleged scheme used fictitious program

According to court documents, Rush created a fictitious sensitive government activity, referred to as “SAP #1,” and represented the real estate activity as serving national security purposes. Prosecutors say the claims and restrictive need-to-know rules made it harder for colleagues and contractors to question the transactions.

Rush, 49, of Ashburn, Virginia, pleaded guilty to wire fraud in federal court in Alexandria on Oct. 6. The Justice Department says he fraudulently obtained approximately $193.6 million in government funds.

Other assets included in forfeiture

The real estate was not the only property tied to the case. FBI agents searching Rush’s Virginia home recovered 298 gold bars, about $2.1 million in cash, €104,795 and luxury watches. Prosecutors say the gold cost the government approximately $46 million. Rush also agreed to forfeit two 2026 BMW Alpina vehicles.

The forfeiture agreement covers assets linked to the fraud, while Rush also faces possible restitution and a fine. The wire-fraud charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 28, 2027.

  • Former CIA official who admitted to $194 million government fraud spent $102 million on Florida real estate, including two Palm Beach homes, a Palm Beach parcel and a Hobe Sound parcel, The Times of India.
  • A former CIA agent is being ordered to forfeit $100 million in luxury Florida properties; investigators say his assets included four homes, gold bars, luxury watches and a car, The Times of India.
