Evacuations Disrupt Gulf Coast Vacations—and Spark Refund Disputes

Families leave a Gulf Coast resort beneath dark storm clouds.

Hurricane Isaias forced visitors to leave Alabama’s Gulf Coast as officials prepared for the storm’s expected arrival near the Florida-Alabama coast. The evacuation upended holiday plans, including a weekend wedding and a major festival, while some travelers said they could not get clear answers or refunds for prepaid vacation rentals.
\

Key takeaways\

\

  • Alabama ordered non-residents to evacuate coastal areas ahead of the storm.\
  • Some vacationers reported frustration over delayed or denied refund requests.\
  • Airbnb and Vrbo said storm-related policies could cover eligible bookings in affected areas.\
  • Officials and tourism representatives urged travelers to contact booking providers and review rental terms.

The dispute unfolded as authorities urged visitors to leave and lodging businesses prepared for dangerous weather.
    \

Evacuation orders upend travel plans\

Thousands of visitors were in the region when the evacuation order disrupted stays and travel. Beach lodging occupancy in Baldwin County was about 80% earlier in the week, according to county officials. The National Shrimp Festival and other planned events were canceled, and transportation disruptions—including airport closures and flight changes in parts of the Florida Panhandle—added to the uncertainty.

A visitor who had traveled from California for a Gulf Shores wedding said online that she had not received a refund or communication from the company managing her rental. Her family later arranged another property in Mobile, where the wedding was relocated. The rental company said it was also dealing with the threat and memories of past storm damage.
\

Refund policies vary by booking\

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach tourism officials advised guests to contact the company they booked through, check their rental agreement and consult any travel-insurance provider. They noted that reservations made through a booking platform or third party may need to be handled by that provider rather than directly by the property.

Vrbo said its extenuating-circumstances policy was active in areas expected to be affected, while Airbnb said its Major Disruptive Events policy applied to eligible stays in areas under the mandatory evacuation order. Coverage depends on the booking and affected location, so travelers were encouraged to check directly with the platform.
\

Safety and communication collide\

Hospitality experts said travelers have a legitimate interest in prompt answers when an evacuation makes a prepaid stay unusable. But property managers facing a hurricane may also be securing buildings, protecting staff and helping guests leave, and may not be able to assess damage or determine every reimbursement option immediately.

Tourism representatives said some local rental companies were offering refunds or credits, though visitors described differing experiences. Officials urged travelers to prioritize evacuation instructions and follow up on reimbursement options once conditions allow. The storm’s potential for flooding, damaging winds and power outages made leaving the coast the immediate concern.
