Broward County is celebrating a significant milestone with the grand opening of its expanded Convention Center. This long-awaited project, more than a decade in the making, promises to elevate the region’s tourism appeal and stimulate economic growth. The enhanced facility aims to provide a premier waterfront conference experience.

Key Takeaways

  • The expansion adds 1.2 million square feet to the existing facility.
  • New features include additional meeting space, a 350,000-square-foot exhibit hall, and a 65,000-square-foot ballroom.
  • The project is expected to generate over $450 million in annual economic impact and create more than 3,000 jobs.

A Decade in the Making

Efforts to expand the Broward County Convention Center first gained momentum in 2014. After more than ten years of planning and construction, the "East Expansion" is now a reality. Broward County Mayor Beam Furr expressed excitement for the future, stating, "Today is a moment to celebrate — but it’s also a moment to look ahead."

The convention center, originally opened in 1991, has been a cornerstone for hosting numerous conferences and major events. Its strategic location on the west side of the Intracoastal Waterway, near Port Everglades and easily accessible to travelers, makes it a prime venue.

Enhanced Facilities and Economic Impact

The newly unveiled expansion significantly increases the center’s capacity and offerings. It boasts an additional 1.2 million square feet, featuring more meeting spaces, a vast 350,000-square-foot exhibit hall, and an impressive 65,000-square-foot ballroom. Broward County Administrator Monica Cepero highlighted the facility’s new status, calling it "South Florida’s premier waterfront conference center, providing luxury and comfort while remaining environmentally responsible."

This expansion is part of a broader initiative to enhance the tourist experience in Fort Lauderdale. It complements recent infrastructure improvements, including a new bypass connector road from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and the upcoming Omni hotel project. Collectively, these developments are projected to inject more than $450 million into the local economy annually and create over 3,000 full- and part-time jobs in Broward County.
