A vacation rental in Bonita Springs, Florida, was discovered in a state of utter devastation following a massive party over the weekend. Homeowners Jeff and Karen Davis, who own the property, were alerted by neighbors and flew in to find their home unrecognizable, with extensive damage to both the interior and exterior.
The incident has left the Davises facing thousands of dollars in repairs and grappling with a mysterious disappearance of the booking details, raising concerns about accountability and future security for short-term rental owners.
A Scene of Devastation
Upon entering their property, the Davises were met with scenes of destruction. Video footage shared by the homeowners revealed mud splattered on walls, furniture overturned and damaged, and widespread trash. The damage extended outdoors, with the grill found thrown into the pool and patio furniture destroyed. Jeff Davis noted that all surveillance cameras had been removed prior to the party, suggesting a premeditated act.
The Vanishing Booking
The rental was reportedly booked through Booking.com for a single night. Initial communication with the guest seemed normal, with messages exchanged before check-in and a positive update received on the evening of the stay. However, after the party, the Davises found that the reservation name on Booking.com had changed to "anonymous," and the platform claimed it could no longer find the reservation. The Davises have not received any payment for the stay and are struggling to get a resolution from Booking.com.
Investigation Underway
Neighbors reported dozens of people attending the party on Saturday night. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed deputies responded to the scene and found multiple individuals present, though no arrests were made at the time. The Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the incident and is in communication with the homeowners.
Protecting Short-Term Rentals
In light of this event, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office has provided recommendations for short-term rental owners to enhance security:
- Access Control: Utilize smart locks with time-bound codes that expire automatically and integrate with booking platforms. Avoid sending access codes too far in advance.
- Surveillance: Install tamper-resistant or concealed exterior cameras and use systems that alert if they go offline. Consider backup monitoring systems like noise sensors.
- Monitoring: Implement noise monitoring devices to detect excessive decibel levels and occupancy sensors or Wi-Fi trackers to identify unusually large groups, enabling early intervention.
- Insurance and Legal: Secure short-term rental insurance covering vandalism and guest damage, understand platform protection policies, and consider requiring damage protection waivers from guests.
The Davises hope their experience will serve as a cautionary tale for other rental property owners, emphasizing the need for robust security measures and clear accountability from booking platforms.
