Mulligan’s Beach House Closes Doors in Jensen Beach After 23 Years Due to Soaring Rent

After more than two decades serving the Jensen Beach community, Mulligan’s Beach House has closed its doors permanently. The popular beachfront restaurant’s final day of operation was Easter Sunday, marking the end of an era for many locals. The owners cited unsustainable rent increases as the sole reason for the closure, emphasizing that the business itself remained strong.

Key Takeaways

  • Mulligan’s Beach House in Jensen Beach closed after 23 years of operation.
  • The primary reason for closure was attributed to escalating rent costs.
  • The owners stated the business was financially sound but could not absorb the increased lease expenses.
  • Attempts to find a buyer were unsuccessful due to similar concerns about high rent.
  • Employees were offered transfers to other Mulligan’s locations, with most accepting.

A Difficult Decision Driven by Economics

The owners of Mulligan’s Beach House expressed that the decision to close was not a reflection of declining customer support or sales. Instead, they stated that for the past couple of years, the business was primarily focused on covering the "exorbitant rent" demanded by the landlord. Despite a strong 23-year run, the revenue was no longer sufficient to meet the escalating lease terms.

Unsuccessful Search for a Buyer

For six months, the owners actively sought a buyer for the Jensen Beach location. However, potential investors and buyers shared the same sentiment, expressing concerns over the high rental costs, which ultimately prevented a sale. The owners also noted that the building was already partially vacant, suggesting that other businesses in the vicinity might be facing similar financial pressures.

Gratitude and Future for Staff

The owners extended their sincere gratitude to the Jensen Beach community, including local business leaders and their dedicated staff, for their unwavering support over the years. Employees at the Jensen Beach location were offered opportunities to transfer to Mulligan’s other restaurants in Vero Beach and Sebastian. Most staff members accepted these transfers, ensuring continuity for many.

Other Locations Remain Open

Mulligan’s Beach House locations in Vero Beach and Sebastian remain operational. The Vero Beach restaurant continues to offer oceanfront dining with its signature tiki tables, while the Sebastian location provides patio seating with views of the Intracoastal Waterway, a popular spot for dolphin sightings.
