Osaka and Kyoto have taken the top two places in a new ranking of the world’s most attractive cities, highlighting Japan’s growing appeal among international travelers. New York City placed third, while Seoul, Paris, London, Rome, Okinawa, Bangkok and Dubai completed the 2026 top 10.

Key takeaways

  • Osaka ranked as the world’s most attractive city.
  • Kyoto followed in second place, giving Japan the top two spots.
  • New York City was the highest-ranked city outside Asia.
  • Seoul, Paris and London also earned places in the top five.
  • The list combines major global destinations with resort-oriented locations such as Okinawa and Dubai.

Japan dominates the ranking

The strongest result came from Japan, with Osaka and Kyoto occupying the first and second positions. Their back-to-back ranking reflects the country’s broad tourism appeal, combining historic landmarks, distinctive food cultures, modern city life and highly developed visitor infrastructure.

Okinawa also appeared in eighth place, giving Japan three entries overall. The inclusion of both large urban centers and a resort destination suggests that travelers are responding to a wide range of experiences within the country.

New York leads the Western contenders

New York City secured third place and was the highest-ranked destination outside Asia. Its presence reinforces the city’s continuing status as a global draw for culture, entertainment, dining, shopping and business travel.

Paris and London followed in fifth and sixth place, respectively. Both cities remain major international gateways, known for their historic identities, museums, architecture and strong influence on fashion, arts and cuisine.

Seoul strengthens South Korea’s profile

Seoul ranked fourth, placing it ahead of every European city listed. The result underscores the capital’s expanding international visibility, supported by its technology sector, contemporary culture, food scene and growing influence in entertainment and fashion.

Its position also highlights the broader strength of Asian destinations in the ranking. Four of the top five cities—Osaka, Kyoto, New York City and Seoul—are major metropolitan destinations with distinctive cultural identities and strong global connectivity.

A varied list of global destinations

Rome ranked seventh, adding another European capital with deep historical and cultural appeal. Bangkok, in ninth place, represented Southeast Asia, while Dubai rounded out the list at number 10 with its luxury tourism, striking architecture and highly international character.

The final ranking includes both heritage-rich cities and modern, fast-changing destinations. That mix reflects the varied reasons travelers choose where to go, from history and local culture to leisure, dining, shopping and large-scale urban experiences.

What the ranking signals for tourism

The results point to continued demand for destinations that offer memorable cultural experiences alongside convenience and variety. Japan’s leading performance may further strengthen its reputation as a top global travel market, while the presence of cities across Asia, Europe and North America demonstrates the worldwide competition for visitors.

As travel preferences continue to evolve, rankings such as this provide a snapshot of the cities capturing the strongest attention from international audiences.
