With the upcoming holiday weekend, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office is stepping up its efforts to curb unauthorized house parties at local vacation rentals. Following a series of violent incidents earlier this year, authorities have pledged to deploy specialized units to proactively identify and shut down risky gatherings, ensuring public safety.### Key takeaways

In March, a 17-year-old was killed during a house party at a vacation rental in Kissimmee, followed by another fatal shooting involving a teenager the following month. These events prompted the Sheriff’s Office to shift its focus away from standard complaints toward dismantling gatherings that serve as fronts for illegal activity, underage drinking, and violent behavior.### Partnership with vacation platforms

To assist with these efforts, the Sheriff’s Office is working closely with companies like Airbnb. The platform has implemented specialized technology designed to block or redirect thousands of high-risk bookings for entire homes. Data from last year indicates that such measures successfully prevented unauthorized parties, with over 3,000 bookings flagged in Florida during the same holiday weekend. This tech-driven barrier serves as the first line of defense in the county’s strategy.### Law enforcement strategy

Major Alex Guevara of the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office indicated that street crimes units have been tasked with monitoring for unauthorized events. Officials emphasize that while families are welcome to enjoy the holiday, those using short-term rentals to facilitate criminal activity will face immediate consequences. The department has clear guidelines for enforcement:
