Tom Lee Rules Out 2023 Campaign; Victor Crist Announces Bid for Clerk of Courts

In a significant development for Hillsborough County politics, Tom Lee, a prominent Republican figure, has decided against pursuing an elected office this November. In a statement released Thursday, Lee emphasized that “now is not the right time for me or my family” to re-enter public service, quelling months of speculation regarding his potential candidacy.

Victor Crist Steps Up to Challenge Cindy Stuart

Simultaneously, Victor Crist, a former county commissioner and state senator, announced his intention to challenge Democratic Clerk of Courts Cindy Stuart. This move marks a pivotal moment in the county’s political landscape, as it ends the uncertainty surrounding potential Republican contenders for key constitutional offices.

  • Crist’s Qualifications: Relying on nearly two decades of legislative experience, Crist highlighted his background as chair of the Senate justice appropriations committee, emphasizing his expertise in budgeting for both the court system and clerks.

Lee’s Decision: A Strategic Move

Lee, formerly president of the state Senate, was considered a strong candidate for either the Clerk of Courts or Property Appraiser positions. In a joint statement with Property Appraiser Bob Henriquez, Lee affirmed his commitment to community service, stating:

“I remain committed to serving our community in any way I can… However, today I met with Bob Henriquez to inform him that I have decided now is not the right time for me or my family.”

This public declaration hints that Lee will not be running for any office this fall, allowing him to focus on his family and career in the private sector. Furthermore, Crist mentioned that Lee has encouraged him to pursue the clerk position, reinforcing the collaborative spirit among Republican leaders.

Competitive Races Ahead

The 2023 elections in Hillsborough County are set to feature at least three contested races:

  • Victor Crist vs. Cindy Stuart for Clerk of Courts
  • Republican State Attorney Suzy Lopez vs. Democrat Andrew Warren
  • Open countywide commissioner seat with Democrat Sean Shaw and Republican Christine Miller among the candidates

Each race promises to be fierce, especially with the implications that the outcomes may have on local governance.

Financial Implications and Community Impact

Despite his withdrawal, Lee was believed to have considerable financial backing available for a campaign, estimated to be in the six figures. His absence leaves a strategic opportunity for other candidates like Henriquez, a well-regarded figure in West Tampa thanks to his decades of public service and popularity as a former high school football coach.

“I value [Lee’s] friendship, have immense respect for his decades of public service, and look forward to working with him in future endeavors for the benefit of our community,” Henriquez noted in their joint statement.

Additionally, newcomer John Ballance, a retired sales executive, has filed to run against Henriquez, further complicating the landscape for the Property Appraiser position.

Conclusion

The upcoming elections in Hillsborough County are shaping up to be a critical battleground with the ongoing shift in leadership dynamics. As familiar faces step back and new ones emerge, the community will be closely watching how these developments unfold.
