Community First Credit Union to Transform Historic Edgewood Bakery into New Murray Hill Branch

Community First Credit Union is taking exciting steps to breathe new life into the former Edgewood Bakery building, located at 1012 Edgewood Ave. S. Nearly nine months after acquiring the property, the credit union has unveiled plans to renovate this long-vacant structure into a unique branch set to open in late 2026.

A Vision for the Future

In a recent announcement, Community First highlighted its commitment to creating a branch that stands out within its network, with innovative design and community engagement at its core. Key features of the project include:

  • A Front Lawn and Social Area: This welcoming outdoor space will foster community interaction.
  • A Community Room: A versatile area for meetings and events, promoting collaboration within the neighborhood.
  • Architectural Features: Elements not typically seen in traditional credit union branches, ensuring a distinctive atmosphere.

Additionally, the building will include a permanent structure dedicated to food offerings, enhancing the overall experience for visitors.

Renovation Timeline and Project Details

The renovation project is currently in its preliminary stages, with architectural and design teams working on plans for interior reconstruction. The estimated completion date for the renovations is late 2026.

Key Project Milestones:

  • Permit Application: Submitted to the city on June 30, 2023, for selective demolition.
  • Estimated Cost: Initial selective demolition is expected to cost around $10,000.
  • Contractor: Premier American Construction Inc. of Middleburg will oversee the selective demolition.
  • Architect: TTV Architects Inc. of Jacksonville will lead the design efforts.

Community First aims to begin extensive interior work once the necessary permits are granted.

Enhancing Murray Hill’s Retail Corridor

Community First President and CEO, Sam Inman, stated the credit union’s intention to create a Murray Hill branch that harmonizes with the area’s unique character. He expressed optimism that this strategic site will revitalize the vacant corner, increasing consumer traffic.

Features of the New Branch Include:

  • One-Story Floor Plan: Designed for easy accessibility.
  • Redesigned Parking Lot: Improved access for customers.
  • Drive-Thru Service: Convenient banking options for busy members.
  • Interior Murals: Artwork showcasing historical photos of the neighborhood, connecting residents to the area’s heritage.

Support from the Community

The project has garnered support from the Murray Hill Preservation Association (MHPA). Greg Beere, the president of the association, expressed enthusiasm for the project, especially regarding the preservation of the historic Edgewood Bakery and the incorporation of community spaces.

MHPA’s Key Takeaways:

  • Support for Historic Preservation: Emphasizing the importance of retaining the building’s historical character.
  • Innovative Designs: Anticipation of creative community areas and meeting spaces.

Historical Context

The Edgewood Bakery has deep roots in the community, operating since 1947. It has changed hands several times, with notable ownership by restaurateur John Valentino, who purchased the property for $700,000 in 2016. Community First acquired the site for $1.65 million in October 2024, marking a significant investment in Murray Hill’s future.

About Community First Credit Union

Established as one of Florida’s largest credit unions, Community First has grown from $156 million in assets to $2.8 billion, serving over 180,000 members through 23 locations across the state. With a dedicated workforce of more than 450 employees, the credit union continues to prioritize community and member engagement.
