Boynton Beach City Commission Considers $15 Million Property Acquisition

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — In a significant move that could reshape parts of Boynton Beach, a real estate firm from Delray Beach is advocating for the city to invest more than $15 million in taxpayer dollars to acquire two prime properties located near Boynton Beach Boulevard and I-95.

Proposed Properties for Acquisition

The properties under consideration include:

  • Inn at Boynton Beach: Located at 480 W. Boynton Beach Blvd., this operational hotel is being offered for $8.5 million.
  • Vacant Lot: Situated at 444 W. Boynton Beach Blvd., this space is available for $7.1 million.

Background on the Properties

According to publicly available documents, a majority of the 13 parcels on the vacant lot are owned by KMG Holdings, whose CEO, Kirill Vesselov, has not commented on the inquiry regarding the sale.

Advocacy by The Starboard Group

The Starboard Group, the Delray Beach firm involved, is actively promoting the property purchase through a campaign that includes distributing "talking points for public comments" during the Boynton Beach Community Redevelopment Agency meetings. They have encouraged community members to express support for the acquisition via letters and emails to the commission.

Comments from Key Figures

  • Billy Cunningham, leader of Starboard Group, stated, “We feel that if the city did purchase these properties, they can then help create what the city feels is the most valuable development plans for Boynton Beach.” He emphasizes that the purchase would enhance the entrance to Boynton Beach and contribute to future success.

  • Bill Morris, a development advisor for the Starboard Group, added that the site presents an excellent opportunity for mixed-use development, suggesting it could house offices, retail stores, and additional hotels. He remarked, “The opportunity for continued greatness here is very real and very special.”

Community Reactions

Despite the push from The Starboard Group, community feedback has been mixed:

  • One realtor, Shelby Seidler, expressed that the current state of the hotel affects local real estate. “It just gives people a weird feeling,” she noted. “That’s your first encounter with Boynton Beach. So I’m hugely in favor of cleaning it up.”

  • Conversely, other local residents, such as Junior Norelus, dismissed the firm’s outreach, stating, “I didn’t really care. It was nothing interesting.”

Current Status

As of now, Boynton Beach commissioners have not made a decision regarding the proposed acquisition of either property. The final outcome will likely depend on how community members influence the discourse at upcoming meetings.

Looking Forward

The potential acquisition underscores the ongoing debates surrounding urban development and investment in city infrastructure. As the city weighs the benefits and consequences of such a significant financial decision, it remains crucial for residents to stay informed and engaged in the process.
