Fort Lauderdale Police Evict Illegal Squatters from Stolen Property

In a significant operation, Fort Lauderdale police, in collaboration with the Broward Property Appraiser’s Office, successfully removed ten individuals from a property on Seabreeze Boulevard that was identified as stolen through title fraud. This recent apprehension follows an exclusive investigation into property theft that was launched last October by CBS News Miami.

Property Condition: A Grim Reality

Mike Fisten, an investigator for the Broward Property Appraiser’s Crimes Against Property team, painted a stark picture of the distressed property:

  • Infestation: The home was described as "bug infested."
  • Structural Damage: Significant damage to walls, flooring, and windows was reported.
  • Overall Neglect: The entire area marked by decay and deterioration.

The Crime Behind the Squatting

This home was allegedly hijacked via a scheme involving title fraud, a practice where individuals manipulate property records for illicit gain. Fisten noted the sophistication of such criminals, stating, "They know the system. They know how to stay there until the courts throw them out."

The eviction involved:

  • Seven men, two women, and one child who peacefully vacated upon police arrival.
  • The locks were changed, and the home boarded to prevent future illegal occupancy.

Insights into the Fraudulent Operation

The initial investigation revealed that Tyrone Jones played a pivotal role in this fraud. Authorities allege he created a fictitious identity to present himself as the executor of an estate valued at over a million dollars.

This investigation has broader implications in Broward County, where it is believed that Jones led a crime ring aiming to illegally acquire 14 properties worth more than $12 million.

Impact on Local Community

The ramifications of such crimes extend beyond the property owner. Marty Kiar, Broward County Property Appraiser, emphasized, "When people steal someone’s property, it creates victims both for the rightful owner and for the community at large."

A nearby resident played an key role in alerting authorities. He detailed a terrifying night when an intruder entered his home:

  • Incident Date: February 27, 2022
  • Time: Approximately 3 AM
  • Description: A man was seen attempting multiple doors and even stepping into the victim’s bedroom.

This unsettling experience contributed to ongoing anxiety in the neighborhood, as the victim remarked, "I’ve had a number of sleepless nights since that moment."

The Legal Aftermath

Following the break-in, Kevin Bosley was arrested for burglary but was released on an ankle monitor. The victim expressed frustration that Bosley was still roaming the community, unaware of his connection to a stolen property until he came across previous news reports.

Property Appraiser Kiar’s team began proceedings to evict the illegal squatters in March, following continued community concern.

Summary of Actions Taken

The eviction operation not only helped reclaim stolen property but also highlighted the ongoing struggle against property crime. Key takeaways include:

  • Number of Cases handled by Kiar’s team: 185 over the past year.
  • Each case is unique, evolving strategies to ensure community safety.

Conclusion

The eviction at Seabreeze Boulevard stands as a testament to the importance of vigilance and community involvement in combating property crime. As law enforcement continues to address these challenges, residents are reminded to report suspicious activity to protect their neighborhoods.
